On May 5, 2026, OpenAI officially released GPT-5.5 Instant, making it the new default model for all ChatGPT users. This update replaces GPT-5.3 Instant and represents a shift in how OpenAI balances speed, accuracy, and personality. While the “Thinking” and “Pro” models remain the primary tools for research and complex reasoning, GPT-5.5 Instant is designed to be the efficient “daily driver” for the general user base.
What is GPT-5.5 Instant?
GPT-5.5 Instant is the high-speed, low-latency version of the GPT-5.5 architecture. It is optimized for everyday tasks such as answering questions, writing, simple coding, and translation.
Unlike the more deliberate GPT-5.5 Thinking model, which pauses to reason through multi-step problems, Instant is built for responsiveness. However, it now includes a “smart-switching” capability. If a prompt is particularly complex, the model can automatically trigger deeper reasoning to ensure the answer is correct before delivering it.
Why It Matters: Key Improvements
The jump from version 5.3 to 5.5 focuses on three main pillars: factuality, conciseness, and personalization.
Reduction in Hallucinations: In internal testing, OpenAI reported that GPT-5.5 Instant produced 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims than its predecessor in technical domains like medicine, law, and finance.
